There's so much going on now; what do we do about it? Where do we begin to do it?
The stimulus bill passed the Senate, and according to a guest Glenn Beck had on this evening, they buried deep within it, as politicians will, the bare bones for implementing Obama's Universal Health Care plans. How underhanded is that? Seems the most "ethical administration in history (Democrats like that phrase, 'in history'---Pelosi pledged 'the most ethical Congress in history' after the 2006 disaster) is off to a magnanimous start.
The woman said that the best thing to do is to contact your Reps and Sens and tell them you want it removed, so there can be good-faith discussions. Does the medical industry want socialized medicine? Even more, and ever more, government involvement, literally in their business?
I have not met one person, liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, who actually supports this bill. Not a single one! It's insane that it's gotten this far. I think that this does not bode well for America's future.
We conservatives are going to have to pull together and work to prevent this catastrophe from happening; the first line of defense would be information. Informing others of what's going on. This means, initially, of course, informing ourselves as best we can.
We need to know what's going on. Problem is, we're not Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilley or Sean Hannity, whose jobs are to immerse themselves in the madness and distill the nuances down for the rest of us to consume. And there's so MUCH to consume!
Our lives, however, do not revolve around this stuff, as important as it is, and is rapidly to become.
Most of us, I assume, have a time-consuming life which, for example and since we're not liberals, might pprobably include a job. This further consumes our time.
I'm fortunate, in that I often get to listen to talk radio during work, but even so, it's hard to absorb, even when I'm listening at home, let alone work. So much of it is so hard to wrap your mind around.
It does no good to try and inform others when we don't have the information ourselves, though. Also, and I've often found this to be an issue, we're trying to inform a bunch of people who, well, let's face it, pretty much really don't give a crap. Who cares if the country goes to crap? Just gimme my "American Idol"!
One method I use, however, is letters to the editor; my local paper is very fair (they even published me as a guest writer, once), and I write as often as I can; usually once a week.
Also, this method allows me to collect my thoughts and organize the information. I'm a terrible face-to-face debater; I simply don't think fast enough.
I'm often inspired by something particularly outrageous that I heard on the radio. I pick a topic of personal importance, go home and check into it online and do a bit of research.
I spend about a week composing each letter, and try to make them mildly humorous, but I try to make sure that I'm informing, too.
I don't know who reads them, but I've gotten myself something of a following. It's funny; people recognize my name when I introduce myself.
"Are you the Rob Denham from the paper?"; so I must be getting to someone. My wife works for a large insurance company's pharmaceuticals call center, and when she gets local customoers on the line, she's often been asked if she's "married to the guy in the paper".
It makes her nervouis to say yes.+LOL+
Also, as I noted in my post on the "New Great Depression", I've also gotten myself into a debate that won't end.
I couldn't swear to it, but I think, since I began my little campaign of conservatism (it's been 2 years this month), I'm inspiring others to write in, too. By standing my ground, and not just simply shutting up and going away, like most other conservative writers to the paper in the past have done, I think I might just be emboldening others to do the same. At any rate, I don't seem to be as alone in the pages as I was before.
Win their hearts and their minds will follow.
But, we have to do something, and LTEs are as good a place to start as any. If we're going to fight this, we're going have to start like Thomas Paine; if we're successful, we'll bring some "Common Sense" back to America.
