AP WICHITA, Kan. — Late-term abortion doctor George Tiller, a prominent advocate for abortion rights wounded by a protester more than a decade ago, was shot and killed Sunday at his church in Wichita, his attorney said.

Attorney Dan Monnat said Tiller was shot as he served as an usher during morning services at Reformation Lutheran Church. Monnat said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time of the shooting.

The women's clinic run by Tiller, 67, has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades. A protester shot Tiller in both arms in 1993, and his clinic was bombed in 1985.

Capt. Brent Allred said Wichita police were looking for a gunman who fled in a 1993 light blue Ford Taurus registered in the Kansas City suburb of Merriam, Kan.

No other details about the shooting were immediately released. The phone line at Tiller's home had a busy signal Sunday. Anti-abortion group Operation Rescue issued a statement denouncing the shooting.

"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down," said Troy Newman, Operation Rescue's president. "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning."

Tiller remained prominent in the news in recent years, in part because of an investigation started begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires. A jury in March acquitted Tiller of all 19 misdemeanor counts.

Abortion opponents also questioned then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' ties to Tiller before the Senate confirmed her this year as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Tiller donated thousands of dollars to Sebelius over the years.

As one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions, Tiller had been a high-profile target of abortion opponents for decades. His clinic, Women's Health Care Services, was bombed in 1985, and Tiller was shot in both arms in 1993 by abortion protester Rachelle "Shelley" Shannon of Grants Pass, Ore.

The FBI is sticking its nose into this!! Since when does the FBI usurp local law enforcement?------1-20-09, forgot!!!
Wrong place, wrong time wrong way to do this. He has only given the MSM fodder for their causes. It will be more than the shooter than pays for this "just another right wing extremist"!! I agree with you Dee 100% but murder is murder and I would have preferred to see Tiller in jail for the rest of his natural life. They would have had to put him in solitary for his own protection from prison justice.

Murder is murder. By murdering the abortionist, the prolife advocate made himself guilty of the crime he is against! I do not mourn his passing, but rejoice that more innocents will be given a chance at life! I pray that our Lord grants him the same generous mercy that he bestowed on the innocents.

One thing for sure, he will not be killing any more babies. Let God be the judge and the souls of the innocent ones he murdered.

Suffer little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven. I guess he did not understand that babies are God's greatest treasures.

He will be judged now, not by the earthly courts, but by God. I have no words of sympathy nor solace for such a person who, for a living, kills the most innocent of all human life.

This instance, and others like it, is not the fault of the weapon used, but the "kook" that pulled the trigger.

Strange indeed, and convenient that blame will most likely be placed on right wing extremists or anti-abortionists, it brings up gun control, hate crime and eliminates the problem of unwanted baggage. The left blogs are already on it. CBS/AP stated that he had asked for extra protection because of threats and vandalism, etc.

We can not set in judgment, pray that his family will be given strength to get through this.

The man had no soul, only a soulless person could take the life of a defenseless infant.
I would wager that he was in church for social reasons, not religious ones, if he were seeking atonement for his despicable acts he would have ceased doing them ... he did not.

I did NOT like that Doritos Super Bowl commercial where the little boy slaps the adult male in the face. Why is that funny? Children should be taught to respect adults, but the Doritos people think it is fine for a child to strike a man. Would it st…
