Looking back at what concerned us most before the campaign began in early 2008, what was the top priority in our nation?
If my memory serves me right, it was our struggling economy, and unemployment, right? A disgusted population with the Bush administrations inability to say and do the right things, right ? Now along comes the , “change” campaign, and Mister wonderful saying only the things most popular with those who believe the government is the solution for everything. He hit the high notes on troop reduction in the middle east for the moderates, and an open and transparent government, seeking consensus of all left and right political beliefs. The more profound and effective rhetoric was his constant drumming of
making big business more responsible for it's share of revenue and slamming them for taking advantage of the little guy. If the little guy made $250,000 a year or less he would not be subjected to a tax increase.
Government by any other name is still government, and government as a service is only as effective as it's leaders make it. Some are more effective than others, but none of them have to compete with anyone. That is the drawback when comparing it to the necessity of competition. That is the reason we must guard against those who lead us. The bigger we get, the leaders grow further from us and thus take risks they otherwise would not. Suffice to say, that Mr. Obama believes the direction given him was to lead us into more government, however, a deception has occurred as National Health Care would not have been his top campaign promise nor would Cap and Trade reform, because if they had been, he wouldn't be where he is, and that is now proved to be the case. Enough of what we as doubters already know and onto the meat of the situation.
My experience with government was back in the late 1950's I worked for a County with a population then of about 100,000. As I remember the County staff was about 300 and I was an employee in the Public Works Department. It was a good job with higher than average pay and good benefits. After about 6 months, one day I had little or nothing to do and ask my supervisor for a task, and he advised me to ride up and down the elevator till quitting time but act like I was going somewhere. I was so mad the next morning turned in my resignation, sought a job in private engineering and got it, and every since have been concerned about the lack of initiative or incentives in government. It is more about a persons drive to succeed in general which for the most part is missing in government and thereby reduces the position to just a job, nothing more, nothing less. That is not to say anything bad about those who work in government, but it is no secret that it is none the less far more secure than a private job. Government has it's place in our society and many programs are absolutely necessary, and in America our best asset has always been to recognize where the line should be drawn. Most Americans know government is not nearly as efficient as a business or industry. Profit driven ambition can whip government every time a challenge comes along. It is a human nature issue, it has more to do with psychology than anything else, there is no other government that has captured this ideology and it has made us the envy of the world.
The challenge however is to all Americans again on exactly where we draw the line. The pendulum has swung too far to the left in 2008 and those who believe the government is the answer are pushing so hard to keep it left, do not realize it must swing back at some point, gravity tells us that. My thoughts are to those who actually believe a socialist way of life is superior to our American way of life, should move to a socialist Country and be happy, and leaving us to toil with all the freedoms we enjoy as capitalists. Big business and industry are not perfect, but the system of capitalism has a way of dealing with imperfections, like glut, theft, unfair practices, they ultimately fail because of their inability to adjust to acceptable levels of service or goods. It is and has been the American way from the beginning. Government on the other hand has but one constraint, us! I dare say now, we blew it this time.
Some organizations are hard to distinguish as government or business, but it only fools the vulnerable, the US Postal service is one such entity as it is suppose to function as an , “Enterprise Fund” in that it was, to offsets expenses with revenues, and in the end it does not work that way, because we as taxpayers have been subsidizing it for years. This then sets the stage for the current argument involving National Health Care. Remember the one thing said most to placate decent is, the Presidents statement that, “I will not sign this bill if it is not revenue neutral”. That exact same statement was made when the US Postal service was created by Congress. The intentions are easy to find as it is a means to an end, but proving it true takes years, and like the postal service, time is forgiving once the dye is cast! In the instance of National health Care, an impossibility to forecast as the, cause an effect, are virtually indeterminable. We would actually be better off to take the trillion dollars and simply pay the uninsured directly.
The real solutions are not even considered viable by liberals, and that is to cut waste in Medicare and Medicaid, remove state barriers on the insurance industry, along with a strong tort reform and this discussion would be finished. Not for our inefficient government, thats too simple, we need a 2000 page piece of legislation, that will create thousands and thousands of regulations, much like the Internal Revenue Service to even begin the actual service to people. And worse the expense for it all is now destroying the value of the American dollar. If this don't stop to make you think, nothing will.
