In The Beast on the East River, Nathan Tabor offers a unique perspective on the United Nations vis-à-vis its relationship with the United States, as well as its overall mission and long-term goals as an organization.

While an entire library of books have been written on the UN, most have dealt primarily with its effectiveness (or lack thereof) at peacekeeping, nation-building, and forestalling/halting international aggression. Other books have tackled the United Nation’s cumbersome procedures, the anti-Semitism of the General Assembly, or links between member states and terrorism. The Beast on the East River hits closer to home; it is an unflinching look at how the United Nations has undermined not only the concept of national sovereignty, but has compromised the sovereignty of the United States itself.

In addition, Nathan diverges sharply from the prevailing wisdom on his diagnosis of the UN. Most exposés on the United Nations highlight its flaws with the aim of improving or reforming the institution. There is a reason for that; most believe that the UN began as a noble idea, that as time went on, it fell into decay, corruption, and irrelevance. The Beast on the East River reveals the folly of such thinking. The United Nations was founded upon the idea of superseding—indeed, usurping national sovereignty. The United Nations is problematic not because it has gone off the rails, but because it is doing precisely what it was created to do—construct a new international order by gathering power to itself. Worst of all, the insistence of the UN bureaucrats on viewing the world order as a zero-sum affair has placed us squarely in their path—friction is inevitable, for they claim squatters’ rights on the issues of sovereignty, taxation, and the right to maintain a standing army.


The question of our era is not how to reform the United Nations; rather, it is this: who does your allegiance lie with? The Constitution of the United States, or the unaccountable, ever-expanding bureaucracy at Turtle Bay?
