I have been planing for a few day's to go the ocean and watch the suffer down to the beach surf some of the waves during hurricane Bill and i have to say, I have a new found respect for these guys.
I grow up watching wild world of sports showing surfing championships from Hawaii and or California and you see those waves and you see the ones in New England and you say, these guys don't know what real surfing is, Well i couldn't have been more wrong.
The ocean in New England is cold and it cuts down on your body temperature and you have to wear a wet suit to keep warm and you also have to deal with a stronger current especially if your going to surf during a hurricane, like these guy did and these crazy guy surf in the winter because Hurricane don't really effect us that much because of the Cape but in the winter a Northeaster is a Maine Hurricane and the waves can do some real damage and these guy going surfing in it.
They were being pounded today by the waves and you could see they were getting tired and a gentleman name Larry comes out and you could see he was a little out of energy and he said that it was getting you in the upper arm and that it was alright on top but the current was pushing you down but not to much.
I could see out there watching the water that it was really stirring up the bottom of the ocean and that the Lobster men were going to have a fun time pulling there traps out of the mud after this one is over, take it from someone that did it for a few years, there not going to have a good time. I went bright and early and Kennebunk beach is full of dogs first thing in the morning and i have to say, They were well behaved and having a great time playing ball, catching the freebie and playing around with each other and it was a lot of fun taking pictures and having some of the dog coming over to get patted.
I have created a photo album of the surfers and i will tell you i don't have zoom on my camera but you still can see them catch a wave and ride it and some shots of a few dogs playing, The tide was just starting to come in so the best part of the Hurricane hadn't started yet but the waves were building as i was there so there are some good picture of the beginning of Hurricane Bill so for your enjoyment i give you surfing in New England, Empire style.
