I remember reading the history of Turkey when I was a boy. Before World War I, Turkey's capital had been Constantinople, the second Rome. From 330 AD down to 1920 AD Constantinople was the seat of a mighty emperor, whether Roman or Turkish. It had an arcane bureaucracy, which crushed people's lives, and daunting military defenses. The might of the entire British Empire, the world's strongest nation during World War I, could not hold at Gallipoli and storm Constantinople.
