Yes, helping neighbors is important (which means that being prepared to help is important). These emergencies help draw people together locally. And local self-help is the best.

I remember discussing this with a work associate. He said that it was a race between the thawing of food in the freezer and the freezing of people in the house.

I have two spare car batteries and a converter of some sort (and a charger). This will run small appliances off and on for quite a while.

I am fortunate to have a gas fireplace which will heat even though the power is off.

I have the R-5 2'x4'x2" foam insulation to wrap my freezer in.

Great post James. I hope all went well during the storm. And I hope that people will share (or ask for) ideas to help ease the discomfort of being without power.

OK..An old elk hunting trick that might help others is to simply get large picies of dry ice, wraped good in newspaper and put in the top shelf of your freezer and frezzer compartment of your ice box. We usede to keep food froze for 3 or 4 days in just a plastic cooler, if my memory serves correct.
