The South Carolina Republican Party announced Monday that it’s uniting
with tea party groups in the state to share resources, coordinate
messaging and push the GOP in a more conservative direction.

The points of contact between the state party establishment and the
grass-roots will be the Greenville County Republican Party — one of the
most conservative wings of the state party — and the Upstate Coalition
of Conservative Organizations, an umbrella structure of state tea party
groups.

The agreement, as announced by South Carolina Republicans, is designed
to serve four goals: increase precinct involvement, improve
communication between the state party and grass-roots groups, create
liaisons between the state party and the various tea party
organizations and to work “closely to make the Republican Party more
conservative.”

State Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd told POLITICO that the
arrangement came at the suggestion of a local activist who works with
both the state party and local tea party groups.

Is this doable in VA? Why or Why not?

It's either sink or swim for the party in general but how interesting that it's happening in S.C.

Virginia should be following suit. I need to get more acquainted with our Tea Party orgs locally and see how they are set up and who runs them. That should give us an idea of whether it's feasible or not.

Ultimately the party would be wise to get on the trolley...

This is not a good idea. Joining with either party, will taint the movement. The Tea Party groups need to remain separate and able to hold both parties feet to the fire. That is not to say that the members of the Tea Party should not flood the membership of the parties and take them over, so that the candidates that support their view are selected.

Freddy, they are uniting on "message" not organizationally. I think that is a good thing. The Republicans are starting to "get it" they have strayed from even the party platform. The Tea Party will help them get back on track. I hope we see more of this.

If that is the case then I misunderstood the issue. Truly uniting on message is a good thing. Forgive me for my doubts, but I am always suspicious of those that have been in charge when they say they are changing. They have to prove it to me first with their actions and not their words.

Why do you think you're incorrect? For every political and social movement in history there has always been a fractionary force, a split of the main idea because sometimes there will be disagreements even within a movement. This is natural. I don't think it's bad until factions of the tea party split up and try to sabotage what the mainstream movement is doing; and that's always a possibility. We'll have to listen carefully to what leaders say and pick each word and make sure they're not becoming too...let's not say radicalized but militant. At that point you have a group of people so bent on one agenda without benefit of debate or opposition considerations that they will become a problem.

But I'm usually positive. I just throw that into the pot because it's what I do, to think of alternatives...
