Life: The Foundation of All Liberties

Dear Friend,

Today marks the anniversary of a date representing epic moral and social decay in our beloved nation's history, the passage of Roe vs. Wade, thirty-seven years ago. Since this horrible ruling was made, countless numbers of unborn lives have been taken against their will across our nation.

As a mother of five, I know the joys that can be brought by children, as well as the challenges that parenting brings. One of the early decisions that I made as a young woman was the decision to choose life for all of my children and not consider abortion as an option for our family. This decision has enabled me to watch as my children have grown and learned through each of life's stages and has given me a clear, vibrant perspective on the potential that each unborn life has.

My Christian faith affirms to me that life is not ours to decide. It is a right given only by our Creator, not a gift bestowed on us by our Government. It is my strong stand that life should be preserved, respected, and protected for all humans - from the point of conception to the eldest among us. Life is the foundational, fundamental right that we enjoy. It is upon life that all other liberties are built.

I have always fought for life, even before my entry into the political scene. In my early days as a Mother, I volunteered at a home for crisis pregnancy and helped share the joys of motherhood with young women considering an abortion. It was in these days which I began working hard in the trenches to get pro-life candidates who would stand and fight for life elected to office. It is because of these experiences that I realize the importance to many of you that you send a Conservative to Washington who will stand strong and fight for those without a voice and defend the right to life.

I look forward to working hard and earning your trust to send me as your Representative to Washington. Once in Washington, I pledge to fight as a champion for the cause of life. I will vote against any efforts to fund or increase abortion and end of life counseling efforts. Whether these efforts are being supported by the Obama, Pelosi, Perriello team, or even by my own party - I will always stand for life.

As your next Representative in Congress, I look forward to supporting the Personhood Ammendment as well as supporting any efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. It is my willingness to fight for these fundamental values, such as life and family, which has earned me the personal endorsement of pro-life leaders such as Helen Blackwell (President, Virginia Eagle Forum), John Whitlock (Past President, Family Foundation of Virginia), Roger Pogge (Winning Matters Director, Family Foundation of Virginia), Mike Smith (President and Founder, Thomas More Institute) and Mike Farris (President, Homeschool Legal Defense Association).

Virginia's 5th District needs a true Conservative who will stand against the liberal tide for the values and liberties that have made our nation great. I am and will be that Conservative who will fight, just a Congressman Virgil Goode did, for life, liberty, and opportunity - first and foremost among these, however, is life.

Please join with me today as we fight this battle to take America back and reclaim our liberties through Conservative principles, common-sense solutions, and a voice from the people - not a voice to the people. I am traveling across the district trying to get out the message of smaller government, lower taxes, and liberty.

While I personally agree with everything Ms. Morton said in her very well written letter. I believe the pro life movement is asking the good citizens of this once very free country to support the passing of legislation that in fact goes against the ideal of less government intervention in our lives.

How can we on one hand demand the government to stay out of our personal lives and at the same time ask that they pass legislation to limit the freedom of those that disagree with our religious beliefs. I think this goes against what the founding fathers knew that church and state be kept separate.

While I agree that by sheer definition abortion is just another word for the taking of a life and those that do will ultimately have to answer to a power that is not elected. I don't believe it is my place to make that judgment. Just my humble opinion. I'm sure this will get me in trouble with a lot of those here but it is how I feel about this. And before you ask, yes, I have 4 children.

I feel that this issue has been beaten to death. I will not support a candidate that stands solely on the abortion issue. At this point in history we have things pressing that need attention more than a battle that has been going on for 40 years. Good conservative values are fine but lets hear what you are going to do on this health care issue, or terrorism, or Gitmo, or protecting our borders, or protecting our gun rights. It seems to me that we can sit aside Roe v. Wade for an election or two and focus on what is threatening all of us right now.

I don't agree with the argument of separation of church and state on the abortion issue. I don't agree with it on most issues it's used because it is misunderstood and used completely out of context.

But as for the abortion issue, there is a law in the land that is based on natural law forbidding murder. It's not up to a person's religious belief whether murder is acceptable or not. Murder is a violation of God's law. He gave us the right to life, not SCOTUS. We recognize that in our Declaration of Independence. Our form of government was set up to protect the rights given to us by God. Unfortunately our federal government failed us with the Roe v Wade decision.

Unfortunately, I agree this issue has been beat to death, and some folks don't want to hear about it anymore...or at least not all the time. While it may seem like a dead issue, I don't believe it should be set aside. That's like saying, "let's just set aside our right to liberty for a few elections and get our pursuit of happiness in order." No, we should not be setting any of our inalienable rights aside...ever.

Having said that, while I believe the life issue is central, it is not the only issue. I was very annoyed with what happened with the House bill on Health Care and the Stupak amendment in November. There was such a huge push from all the family values & pro life organizations to vote in favor of the Stupak amendment when all of their attention should have been on voting no on the whole legislation. So instead of pushing to protect all of our rights, they sacrificed one for another. They missed the forest for the trees.

Politicians often throw pro-lifers under the bus, and I think Ms Morton was trying to convey in this letter that she would not do that. Keep in mind this letter went out on the Anniversary of Roe v Wade, so that was obviously the subject at hand.

It is not as complicated as it is usually presented.
Murder need not be a political issue any more than car theft needs to be a political issue.
The political aspect of this is only the crime scene. It occurs on MY property.
So if I find you on MY property do I have the right to kill you? (Add to the evidence that I invited you.)

Mrs. Morton is one of many good candidates in the 5th.
