Firefox Browser -NOTE FF versions 3.5 on are having a high rate of stability issues, see post in this discussion

Many of our members have problems with this site. Anything from the chat freezing up or slowing down, to not being able to reply or add discussions, blogs, etc.... Some complain about not being able to send email or delete or archive them. I was having many of those problems as well until someone very smart talked me into trying Firefox browser. Since then I have not had any of the aforementioned problems. And as an added bonus Firefox is not as susceptible to viruses and trojans. Not to mention there are numerous add ons for about anything you could want. You might give it a try.

Some of my favorite add ons are:
Sxipper
Xmarks
FEBE
Screengrab
Personas For FireFox

If you use Firefox and have favorite add ons feel free to list them!!

Debbie, I'm trying Firefox; however, what are add ons...especially those you mentioned. Sorry to be so uninformed, but, before retiring, all my hours on the computer each day were spent on Microsoft software or special software designed or purchased for use by Pepsi. These type sites are totally new for me. Just discovered your questions section and hope to use it more; also, the getting started (tutorial) I discovered today. Am looking forward to learning more any way I can. But, good to see a site that is proactive in teaching those of us who are illiterate in these sites and chatting/blogging. It's a whole new world, but one I have to conquer if I want to make a difference in our country. Thanks for your help.

Hello Carol,
Add ons are extra little things you can add to firefox to make it friendlier or easier to use. There are hundreds of them.
Sxipper is a password tool, it will remember user names and passwords for the sites you visit. And can even generate secure ones and remember them. I like it because I am the member of and use so many sites with so many different usernames that I would truly be lost.

Xmarks is for your favorites, or as firefox calls them bookmarks. The difference is that xmarks backs them up on the internet for you so, if something were to happen to your computer or you had to reinstall your browser they can be recovered.

FEBE saves your extensions and backs them up. Useful if you use a lot of files.

Screengrab is a great tool for me. I can click on the screengrab icon at the bottom of my browser and it instantly grabs a picture of the screen and opens my documents folder to save it. Much easier than the process for Explorer.

Personas for firefox lets you customize your browser, personalize it. Mine has a mountain background. You can pick colors, styles, etc....

There are many more.
If you need further assistance please let me know and I will help anyway I can.
Have a great night!
Terri

Funny, I was using Firefox and kept having trouble. I just switched to Internet Explorer and now it is working fine. Which is unfortuate as I much prefer Firefox.

yes Firefox is a great browser, I have been using it since it was Firebird 0.6 in beta. I liked it better than IE even then I think IE was like version 3.2 and Firefox has been in development since then and has gone thru several different iterations. There are just scads of add ons and you can really get some to make your browser act like it is on steroids or something. Look for add ons for Tab Mix Plus, All In One sidebar, All In One Gestures, Tweak Network, and FasterFox. Once you have installed these, look for the Tweak Network and select Options. If you are on a cable or DSL network, you can select the Power tick box and select that, click apply and then OK or close. Then do the same with FasterFox and select Custom for the most capability to change settings.

From experience of using FF almost 24/7 daily, and wanting to help out fellow Resistors.

Ever since release of FF version 3.5 I have had increasingly difficult issues with FF locking up or crashing. I am not alone, as this appears to be a common issue lately with FF v 3.5+ according to several posts at mozilla.org and others. So, as to decrease my issues I recently tried the 3.6 and was horribly disappointed. FF version 3.6 would not even allow me to click on a menu item, locking for periods of 5-10 seconds before response. I have Linux so that may be part of it, but even just installing version 3.6 crashed my browser on install! So, based on this, I recommend that Resistnet users with these issues, and want to use FF, install the 3.0 development versions until Mozilla gets this FF crashing issue sorted out. FF is a great browser, normally, but there is something gone wrong in the 3.5+ versions that I cannot explain, only recommend to Resistnet users an alternative. I would die without my FF addons and features, therefore downgrading is my only option.

I have used Firefox release 3.0.17 for some time now without a SINGLE CRASH or issue with lock ups. Even though it is not considered the cadillac of the Firefox development tree, I have never had an issue with it. For some reason Mozilla is still updating 3.0 versions....I presume to satisfy the old die hards and commercial users, making security patches and such. I am typing on Resistnet with 3.0.19 version referred to on the ftp site as firefox-3.0.19.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2, but there is a windows .exe as well. I would only recommend downloading and reinstalling FF if you are having crashes or lock ups like I have experienced. There is one issue that is unfortunate, but happens with the addons when downgrading. Some version numbers will say they are not compatible with FF verson 3.0.x and will not run. Fixes are possible sometimes.

Here are the links for the files to download if you positively think you are in the same situation and need a fix...but remember, I have not installed nor tested the Win or Mac versions...............:

Linux zip Tarball
Mac dimage file
Windows

If I should find there are some issues with 3.0.19 I will come back and update these links, but so far things are great.............email me at resistnet if you have any questions
