The enemies of freedom do not argue; they shout and they shoot. --Dean William Inge

Wider and More Pervasive Damage
Media focuses on the Obama administration policies that put the entire economy in jeopardy through massive and growing debt. It involves the complete illogic of claiming you can reduce debt by increasing debt; what I have called short term gain for long-term pain. It also means increase in government control. However, there are many legislative actions sliding through almost unnoticed, based on equally false logic and information that are threats to freedom through increased government control and economically damaging.
The phrase “They shout and they shoot” is rhetorical, that is designed to persuade or impress. You can achieve the same threats to freedom without shouting or shooting. Keeping silent about facts is as dangerous as shouting. Acting without evidence for purely political reasons is as threatening as not shooting. Both actions are a common theme of the climate change issue practiced by government. Those who use climate change to limit freedom also will not argue by claiming, “the science is settled”.

Action on Many Fronts
An all out assault to push a political and economic agenda on climate change is underway. One shout came when the White House released the document “Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States.”

Jane Lubchenco of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) who said when appointed, “Obama told her that climate change and economic development should be her agency’s top priorities” presented it.

What does a scientific organization responsible for air and water have to do with economic development? A mission statement written by Lubchenko says, “NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product.”

This is a passive statement and a long way from the active implications of economic development.

At the White House briefing Lubchenco said, ”This report provides the concrete scientific information that says unequivocally that climate change is happening now and it’s happening in our own backyards and it affects the kind of things people care about.” Lubchenco’s statement is like claiming there is concrete scientific information that says unequivocally women are having babies and it’s happening in our own backyards. Climate change is happening and has always happened – it would be more noteworthy if it weren’t happening. It is an incredibly silly and uninformed statement for anyone to make, especially a scientist.

Besides, the Report doesn’t provide “concrete scientific information”. It follows the same pattern as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Impact Report of Working Group II assumes without question that warming and or climate change is due to human produced CO2 then speculates on the impacts. These impacts are then presented as inevitable facts. It is only right if the assumption is correct, but it isn’t. A wider analysis of the misuse, misdirection and deception of data in the White House Report is available at Climateaudit, the blog of Steve McIntyre who exposed the now infamous “hockey stick”.

John Holdren, another White House appointed scientist, provided an example of accepting inevitability, and worse, urging action. Holdren said, “the findings make the case for taking action to slow global warming—both by reducing emissions and adapting to the changes that “are no longer avoidable.” Problems with the statement include; global warming has stopped and the temperature is declining; CO2 levels are not causing warming and do not relate to temperature at any point in any record; climate changes never were avoidable but they are more problematic if you prepare for the wrong change. Holdren’s comments, like Lubchenco’s, show complete lack of understanding of climate science, but like Lubchenco he was apparently appointed for political willingness not scientific rigor.

The EPA Extend its Mandate
A second “shout” came through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but it is shooting with a silencer. It is blindly moving forward with legislation titled, Proposed Endangerment and Cause or Contribute Findings for Greenhouse Gases Under Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act.

They are using their authority to ensure clean air to control or limit CO2 confirmed by a Supreme Court decision. Some say the decision was made by a majority of Justices who were empathetic to concern about global warming without understanding the science. Justice Scalia wrote in dissent, “The Court’s alarm over global warming may or may not be justified, but it ought not distort the outcome of this litigation. This is a straightforward administrative-law case, in which Congress has passed a malleable statute giving broad discretion, not to us but to an executive agency.””

The Clean Air Act item 7602 (g) says, The term “air pollutant” means any air pollution agent or combination of such agents, including any physical, chemical, biological, radioactive (including source material, special nuclear material, and byproduct material) substance or matter which is emitted into or otherwise enters the ambient air.

The definition is so wide it is meaningless or as Scalia put it, “malleable”. It could include virtually anything including oxygen. The EPA identify six greenhouse gases namely, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride. This is a clever mix because the first three are natural atmospheric gases and the last three man-made. (Ironically, hydrofluorocarbons were introduced as a substitute for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) incorrectly claimed to be destroying the ozone layer. The problem is there was never any proof that CFCs were destroying the ozone.) All of these gases together are less than 4 percent of total greenhouse gases.

How can they list naturally occurring gases as pollutants? Because they claim they are causing global warming and climate change, but those are natural processes. There is no evidence that they are due to greenhouse gases at all except in the completely contrived computer models and broadcast in the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). CO2 is essential to life and not causing warming or climate change. In every record for any time period and any duration temperatures change before CO2 not as assumed in the theory that human CO2 is the cause. Methane is only 0.00017 percent of all atmospheric gases and 0.36 percent of greenhouse gases so of little or no consequence. More important, the atmospheric levels have dropped for 14 of the last 15 years.

Why don’t they list water vapor, which is 95 percent of the greenhouse gases by volume? It is by far the most important and abundant greenhouse gas, but is virtually ignored. How much does it vary? How much of any change in the greenhouse effect is due to water vapor? The answer is we don’t know because it varies more around the globe than any other greenhouse gas and is very difficult to measure worldwide.

When media want to show pollution they invariably use a factory chimney. Nowadays virtually everything coming out is water vapor that condenses into visible water droplets. This greenhouse gas, apart from possibly causing warming is causing rot and accelerating decay everywhere. They could also add oxygen because it is causing rust, especially when combined with the moisture.

Government Control and Economic Cost
The EPA says greenhouse gases, but they really mean CO2. While these actions will not generate revenue for government it will seriously impact US business making them less competitive in world markets. They will pass the costs on to the consumers and increase cost of living at a very inopportune time. This is a tough situation to accept even if it was necessary, but is outrageous because it is unnecessary. It is a major pattern of the entire climate debate for proponents to ignore the fundamental science.

The Obama administration pushes Cap and Trade ostensibly to limit greenhouse gases but actually to raise revenue. The President wants a fast track because he needs the money to reduce a deficit already causing him difficulties. Consider the deficit and debt going forward without the revenue from Cap and Trade. Apparently he can create his own system without congressional approval.

Either way it may be in position by late 2009. This activity is political and revenue related and is a loud “shout and shoot.”

EPA is making a mockery of science
Meanwhile his administration through the EPA is making a mockery of science by selectively identifying only some greenhouse gases as pollutants. Victors rewrite history and there are cases when they have rewritten nature, however, it is unconscionable when done by a modern scientific and technical society. It is even more unacceptable when unnecessary. When it means more government control, jeopardizes business and the economy while dramatically increasing the cost of living. There is only one explanation for their actions, ideologically blind politics, but as Aldous Huxley said, “The facts don’t cease to exist because they are ignored.”

US government’s climate con-job

By Paul Driessen Monday, June 22, 2009
Suppose a company doctored data, misrepresented study findings, replaced observations with computer simulations, and hired PR flacks to promote its new “wonder drug.” News stories, congressional hearings and subpoenas would be in overdrive. Fines and jail sentences would follow. And rightly so.

But the standards change when “climate catastrophe” is involved.

White House has made global warming the centerpiece of its revenue-raising and energy policies
The White House has made global warming the centerpiece of its revenue-raising and energy policies. A House of Representatives 942-page bill would tax, regulate and penalize all US hydrocarbon energy use, to “save the planet from climate disaster.” The Senate promises an August vote.

But average global temperatures peaked in 1998 and since have fallen slightly, even as carbon dioxide levels continue to climb. Thousands of scientists say CO2 has little effect on planetary temperatures, and there is no climate crisis. Few developed countries are ready to commit economic suicide, by agreeing to reduce their CO2 emissions by a fraction of what the House bill demands for the United States.

Americans are beginning to realize the legislation would cost millions of jobs and trillions of dollars for a hypothetical 0.1 degree F reduction in global temperatures. Most put global warming dead last in a Pew Research list of 20 concerns.

The government’s answer to these inconvenient truths is simple.

Issue another report by government scientists carefully selected to exclude any who don’t subscribe to climate Armageddon. Ignore contrary data and analyses. Crank out more bogus computer-generated worst-case scenarios. Hire an activist media firm that specializes in environmental scare campaigns. And spend tens of millions hyping every imaginable climate disaster:

Rising sea levels, floods in lower Manhattan, California beaches permanently submerged. Ferocious hurricanes, floods and droughts. Food shortages, epidemic diseases, a quadrupling of heat-wave deaths in Chicago. Aged sewer systems convulsing from massive storm runoff. Wildflowers disappearing from Rocky Mountain slopes and polar bears from the Arctic. Leisure time gone, as people struggle to survive.

“Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States” is the “most up-to-date, authoritative, comprehensive” analysis ever done on how human-caused warming affects the United States, deadpans Obama “science” advisor John Holdren.

Actually, it’s the most flagrant attempted con-job and propaganda campaign in US history.

If it helps Congress enact cap-and-tax legislation, it will give activists, courts and bureaucrats control over virtually every aspect of our lives. It will enable them to confiscate hard-earned dollars, convert them to payoffs for activists and companies that get on the climate-crisis bandwagon, consign uncooperative companies and scientists to the ash heap of history, and conceal the exorbitant costs of restrictive energy policies – on families, industries, jobs and transportation – until long after the bill becomes law.

The bogus “report” conflates and confuses human activities and emissions with the powerful natural forces that have caused major and minor climate changes and weather anomalies since the dawn of time – from the Carboniferous Period to the Age of Dinosaurs, from the Big Ice Ages and interglacial periods to the Little Ice Age, Roman and Medieval Warm Periods, Dust Bowl and countless others. It relies on conjecture, conformist thinking and conspicuous elimination of contrary, skeptical, realist scientists and studies that do not support climate cataclysm conjecture and ideology.

The authors “largely ignored” critical comments to earlier drafts and made the final version “even more alarmist” than infamous UN “summaries” of global warming “crises,” says Joseph D’Aleo, first director of meteorology at the Weather Channel and former chairman of the American Meteorological Society’s Weather Analysis and Forecasting Committee. The report is simply “wrong on many of its claims” and marks “an embarrassing episode for the authors and NOAA,” D’Aleo concludes.

University of Colorado environmental studies professor Roger Pielke, Jr. says the report “misrepresents” his own work, makes claims that are not supported by citations provided, relies heavily on analyses that were never peer reviewed, ignores peer-reviewed studies that reach opposite conclusions from those proclaimed by the report, and cites analyses that do not support conclusions rendered.

“I didn’t notice a single recognized hurricane expert in the list of authors,” says NOAA Hurricane Research Division scientist Stanley Goldenberg. The report relies heavily on surface temperature data from monitoring stations located next to parking lots and air conditioning exhaust ports – falsely skewing temperature records upward – other experts noted. It is lead-heavy on assumptions, assertions and speculation – hydrogen-light on evidence.

But the most egregious miscarriage of science in this agit-prop exercise is its near-total dependence on worst-case scenarios conjured up by computer models. That’s where it gets its litany of “Day After Tomorrow” Hollywood disasters.

These climate models have never been validated by actual observations, notes Professor Robert Carter of the Marine Geophysical Laboratory at Australia’s James Cook University. Indeed, Australia’s own climate modeling agency (CSIRO) stresses that climate change scenarios are based on computer models that “involve simplifications of [real world] processes that are not fully understood. Accordingly, no responsibility will be accepted … for the accuracy of forecasts inferred” from its reports.

“Modeling results are interesting – but worthless for setting public policy,” says Carter. But that is exactly how they’re being used.

Sure, it’s conceivable that Antarctica could melt, and cause sea levels to rise 20 feet, as Al Gore and the government con-artists suggest. Greenhouse gases would merely have to increase average annual Antarctic temperatures from their current –50 degrees F to +40 degrees for a century or two, to melt 200,000 cubic miles of South Pole icecaps. A mere 90-degree swing.

That may be as likely as having the planet overrun by raptors and T-rexes cloned from DNA in fossilized mosquitoes. But it’s conceivable. And in the realm of global warming politics, that’s all that matters. As MIT atmospheric physicist Richard Lindzen observes, “global warming has developed so much momentum that it has a life of its own, quite removed from science.”

As one climate activist group put it: “The task … is not to persuade by rational argument.” It is “to work in a more shrewd and contemporary way, using subtle techniques of engagement. The ‘facts’ need to be treated as being so taken-for-granted that they need not be spoken.” The strategy is to treat “climate-friendly activity as a brand that can be sold. This is the route to mass behavior change.”

This is the kind of science, transparency, honesty and accountability we have come to expect over “human-caused climate chaos.”

If the congressional, administration and activist conspirators behind this massive deceit were in the private sector – peddling bogus drugs, rather than bogus science – they’d quickly become convicts. Instead of jail time, though, they’ll probably get bonus checks.

Reasons to Distrust Your Government
By Alan Caruba Thursday, June 18, 2009

In the normal course of events, when voters no longer have confidence in the President, their Senators and their Representatives, they vote them out of office, but there are whole agencies of government that continue on no matter who is in office and, since their budgets and existence depend on the politics of whoever holds power, they bend to serve their policies.

A democracy is most in peril when citizens conclude they can no longer trust their government and there is no better example of that than a recent report, “Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States”, issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is sheer rubbish.

It is typical of the deliberate distortions and outright lies that have been put forth to an increasingly doubting public regarding “global warming.” It is part and parcel of the deceptions perpetrated for decades now by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, all of which feature tortured data of dubious quality and, since 1998, have ignored the Earth’s cooling trend.

The increasing reports from around the nation of “freaky” weather, of snow in June, and other anomalies are, in fact, a reflection of this cooling trend and it is likely to last at least thirty years or more.

John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President on Science and Technology, and a man who holds some of the most outlandish and baseless views on climate change, said “This new report integrates the most up-to-date scientific findings into a comprehensive picture of ongoing as well as expected future impacts of heat-trapping pollution on the climate experience of Americans, region by region and sector by sector.”

No it doesn’t. For one thing, the “heat-trapping pollution” to which he obliquely refers is mostly carbon dioxide, a gas vital to all life on Earth and a gas which, in the days when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, could be found in concentrations five times or more higher than today. If CO2 was the great Earth destroyer that Holden, Gore, and others insist, there should be no Earth at all as we know it today.

To call CO2 “pollution” is to immediately invalidate the entire report, but to further insist, as the report does, that it is “primarily human-induced” is not just quite wrong, but a great big LIE. Human activity plays virtually no role whatever in the production of CO2.

This product of the interagency U.S. Global Change Research Program is a 190-page piece of loathsome propaganda that predicts more frequent heat waves, more flooding and waterborne diseases, rising water temperatures, more insect infestations and wildfires, and that old standby, rising sea levels with coastal flooding that will no doubt drown Manhattan and other coastal cities.

Hollywood does a better job with such fantasy than the minions of Washington, D.C.

Meteorologist Joe D’Aleo, the first Director of Meteorology at The Weather Channel and former chairman of the American Meteorological Society’s Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting, said of the NOAA report “This is not a work of science, but an embarrassing episode for the authors and NOAA.”

This report and the hours of effort that went into is pure science fiction, predicting outcomes, as all such “global warming” does (now called “climate change”), fifty to a hundred years from now.

Global warming propagandists always focus on a distant and unknowable far horizon, safe in the knowledge that only a future generation will discover their lies. By then, the horrid “environmental” legislation they wish to impose on America will have destroyed its economy and ruined our lives.

It is no accident this report has arrived just in time for a debate on the “Cap-and-Trade” legislation that is nothing more than a huge TAX on all energy use and one that will increase the cost of all energy to everyone by thousands of dollars individually. It will drive industries dependent on large quantities of energy to foreign nations. It is a huge job-killer.

Duke Energy of North Carolina, based on the spurious science of global warming, has asked the regulators of that State for permission to raise electricity prices 12.6 percent. The requested price hike would cost North Carolina ratepayers $496 million. They should change their name to Enron. It’s not being used any more.

Utilities required to include a mix of solar and wind energy, the least efficient and most impractical producers of energy because of Renewable Energy Mandates will be forced to ask for similar increases. America is the Saudi Arabia of coal. It is the most affordable way of generating energy. More coal-fired and nuclear plants would ensure that rates would remain stable for many decades to come.

Naturally “Crazy Eyes” Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, was quick to weigh in on news of the NOAA report. “The impact of the climate crisis on the United states and around the world is becoming increasingly severe.” Nonsense! More lies from the Speaker.

The climate is always in a state of change and that change is determine primarily by the Sun, as well as other natural factures such as the oceans, volcanic activity, and the greatest meteorological mystery of all, why clouds behave the way clouds do.

The NOAA report has already been torn to shreds by many of the leading meteorologists and climatologists throughout the nation. It is pure scaremongering and it is intended to further an environmental agenda that is determined to deprive Americans of the energy sources we will need to power our way out of this government-induced Recession and meet the needs of an expanding population.

It is yet another Obama-driven “crisis” and Americans have good and grave reasons to reject the massive global warming deception, “Cap-and-Trade”, and all those seeking to drive us like lemmings over the cliff of an insolvent, bankrupt nation.

We are not about to fry

By Viv Forbes Wednesday, June 24, 2009
The professional purveyors of panic in the Global Warming Industry continue to scare impressionable children and politicians with tall tales. Their most gruesome story is that earth is about to reach a tipping point, causing runaway warming, after which we all fry.

There is no evidence to support such scare mongering.

Levels of CO2 in the atmosphere continue to grow, while solar activity and world temperatures continue to fall - no evidence of tipping.

Moreover, the past tells us that the current mixture of gases in the atmosphere is not unusual or extreme. How these gases behave will be governed by the laws of physics and chemistry, whatever they are.

Although our views of the laws of science may change as knowledge grows, there is no chance that the science changes - just our understanding.

If the atmosphere contains much the same levels of gases and vapours now as in the past, then the chemical and physical reactions will be the same as they were in the past.

In the past, CO2 levels were five to 10 times higher than now and there was no tipping point.

Therefore CO2 cannot cause runaway warming. Past experience has proved it.
