Decorated, cigar-smoking Marine runs for Congress

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A decorated Marine veteran famously photographed smoking a cigar after the fall of Baghdad is running for Congress in California's most southern district.

Nick Popaditch announced Tuesday that he is seeking the Republican nomination to unseat Democrat Bob Filner.

Known as "Gunny Pop," the 42-year-old Popaditch was awarded the Silver Star for combat actions in Fallujah, where he was blinded in one eye by a rocket-propelled grenade.

That April 2004 attack came nearly a year after an Associated Press photographer captured a smiling Popaditch smoking a cigar, with the just-fallen statue of Saddam Hussein in the background. The photograph landed on newspaper front pages, garnering Popaditch worldwide attention.

California's heavily Democratic 51st Congressional District stretches along the Mexican border from San Diego's suburbs to the Arizona state line.

Filner, first elected in 1992, was re-elected last year with 73 percent of the vote.

Please donate $9.12 to Marco Rubio’s campaign and then email this message to all of your friends and family. It would be disastrous for us to lose in the Florida primary because our candidate doesn’t have enough money to compete.

Subject: 9.12 for Marco Rubio/ Unite for Freedom

Message: Marco Rubio NEEDS our help. Marco is a true conservative who needs our support to win the Florida senate seat in 2010. He is running against Charlie Crist who embraced President Obama’s stimulus plan. Marco will stand up, speak out, and fight for America. Unfortunately, without money, he will be unable to wage a full campaign against a candidate with millions of dollars to spend.

If we all donate $9.12, we help him win and send the message to his campaign that we are out there fighting for him.
Please go to
www.marcorubio.com
and make a donation.

Please forward this email to all of your friends and family and let's get Marco into the Senate fighting for America, freedom, and our children’s future.

Delete Comment Top Republican says White House hiding info on Fort Hood
By Eric Zimmermann - 11/11/09 10:13 AM ET

The ranking Republican on the House intelligence committee on Tuesday night accused the White House of withholding information on the Fort Hood attack.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) said administration officials delayed briefing members of Congress about the alleged gunman, raising "red flags" about what the White House was hiding.

"When they withhold information, you always start asking questions," Hoekstra told Fox News. "That's what raises red flags. What do they know that they don't want us to know?"

Hoekstra linked President Barack Obama's handling of Fort Hood to a chain of other GOP criticisms of the president, including the administration's treatment of detainees and an investigation into possible CIA abuse.

"It is a political correctness that is making it unable for us to identify the real threat of homegrown terrorism," he alleged.

Hoekstra warned that "we have similar Hasans" in the country. The Michigan Republican has called for his committee to investigate the incident. Chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas) has so far declined, preferring to wait for the conclusion of the joint FBI-Army investigation.

Obama has ordered a review of all intelligence on Hasan.

There were 27 Blue Dog Dems that voted 'Yea' on H.R.3962. I hope they will be voted out of office 2010 if up for re-election. I'm putting these on Twitter one at a time and asking they be voted out. Even though Rep Suzanne Kosmas voted NO on the Bill itself, she voted 'Yea' on bringing it onto the House Floor for Consideration. The ONLY reason she voted against the Bill....she is up for re-election in 2010. If they had needed her yes vote I have no doubt she would have given it to pass this Bill.
