Sgt. at arms: Beware of tempers

By MANU RAJU | 8/7/09 3:11 PM EDT

The Senate's sergeant at arms is warning senators and staff to be ready for flaring tempers and dangerous situations at public appearances during the August recess.

“In many cases, members and staff will be involved in public events which include discussions on some current and potentially contentious social topics,” Terrance Gainer said in the e-mail to Senate staff, obtained by POLITICO. “We are aware that there are many valid and varying opinions among the populace about these myriad issues."

But Gainer was quick to add that "there is no information known to us at this time indicating any criminal activity is being targeted toward any particular member or event. However, we do know that sometimes tempers flare, with the potential for disruptions. Should that be the occasion, notifying local law enforcement authorities is highly recommended while attempts are made to calm the situation.”

The Senate adjourned Friday for a monthlong summer recess, joining the House, which has been on break since last week. Since then, there have been several incidents reported where lawmakers have encountered angry demonstrators over a slew of hot-button issues, particularly the health care overhaul moving through Congress.

And Republicans and Democrats have traded sharp jabs about whether they are the result of a true grass-roots uprising or have been ginned up by political opponents.

In his e-mail, Gainer goes on to tell senators and staff to maintain a “heightened state of situational awareness” and to be prepared to observe the locations of exits and emergency call boxes to notify local authorities in the event of an emergency.

“If you see or hear suspicious activity, trust your instincts and notify local authorities immediately,” Gainer said. “Too often, unusual activity is discounted as ‘nothing’ when it might actually be ‘something.’”

Gainer said part of event planning for a senator “ought to include” contact with Capitol Police.

Thats because townhall would not have made a difference...war is decided strictly by the President not the congress.

Part of the reason people are mad is the way the left have been treating them on this entire thing....most of the reps cannot even answer basic questions and do not even know what is in the bills. They tell people your health care services won't be rationed...yet it says so in the bill for example...so people react to those statements. So when your constituents know more than you it causes there to be issues. I have attended many a townhall meeting and people are usually very passionate as is the case now.

Your naivete is dangerous! These folks who are expressing their anger and frustration did not just come to the cause yesterday. They have been calling their elected officials for months, have had to endure the rudeness and callousness of the staff manning their offices, have been lied to again and again, and most importantly, have been ignored. Adding insult to injury, they are then forced to watch their legislators vote in direct conflict of the values they hold dear.

I think the old adage that you must give respect to get respect applies here.

Also, do you realize that these townhalls are being staged by our lawmakers? Pro government run health care supporters are being allowed in before the 'people', are being given talking points and pro-ObamaCare signs, and now, union thugs have been called in to act as enforcers. How in God's name do you process that and still feel obligated to act civil when confronting these dishonorable people!?

i want what ever that girl is smoking. you dont get it yet do you. the seiu and acorn are a very radical and dangerous element. they have their marching orders and if they get in trouble well they will not get punished. we are in a war.. it just isnt a shooting war yet. do you see any of the blue dog dems worried no. we have to make the politicians fear us more than the president. if we can achieve this we can avoid bloodshed and a shooting war. you cannot ride the fence anymore thats what got us here in the first place.

Now we are talking reality. We are truly in a war with the Jane Fondas and all the other left wing ilk that belongs in the sewers. I have been saying for the last year that we are in a WAR. Now look at the brown shirts from the thuggish Acorn backed ESIU. The dear leader can't believe his eyes that anyone would want to dispute him. I think everyone should have their eyes open and travel in pairs to these events.

This is turning out to be the epic battle of our time. Obama and the radical far left have come to realize that our efforts have turned the tide on this issue. They also understand that unless they counter our effort, they'll lose in their quest to nationalize health care.

This counter is straight from the back rooms of Chicago; union thugs and community organizers. They know that the media is on their side, and they know that they can create an incident, such as they did in Tampa last night, and it will be spun in the media to reflect negatively on our movement. Furthermore, and this is the ultimate height of hypocrisy, they'll continue to denounce us as part of a corporate orchestrated effort.

Having said all that, we had to expect that Obama would fight back. However, even I am surprised at the tactics they've chosen. It's clear that they think we will back down, that we will not dare stand up to such a formidable challenge. Chicago-style politics at it's best, being facilitated from the White House...

But, I think Obama has missed his guess. I believe that we will not be intimidated, that we will not back down. I think we will redouble our efforts and come at them even harder. Now is the time to be strong and stand for what you believe in, at whatever cost. No one ever said it would be easy, nothing of value gained ever is.

In the immortal words of John Paul Jones; "I have not yet begun to fight!"

I don't think we have seen enough to make a determination....its like a finger print...not the entire hand. regardless....they do far worse.

Besides...you have the largest aging population out there attending these townhalls and YES they are MAD and they should be...they are afraid and frankly I am afraid for them

I fear for them too. Everytime I see an elderly person now, my heart cries for them. If this health care plan goes through they are the dispendable population. Can you honestly look these beautiful people straight in the eye and tell them everything will be ok? They are the reason I resist this plan.
