ATHENS—Central Athens echoed with the angry chants of tens of thousands of protesters demonstrating against the Socialist government's austerity measures, as
major unions staged a 24-hour nationwide general strike.

The Wednesday march was marred by violence when a group of about 20 youths broke away from the march and started throwing Molotov cocktails and heavy objects at police, damaging bus stops in Athens' Syntagma
Square, where the Greek parliament is located.

Police said about 20,000 people took part in the march, but organizers put the number at more than 40,000.

"It's one of the biggest protests in recent memory," said Christos Papahristos, president of the civil servants labor union ADDEY which organized the rally along with GSEE the umbrella union that represents
private sector employees "It was more than 40,000 people and their
message was very clear," he said. "We can't take more austerity
measures."

Greek police fired tear-gas and clashed with demonstrators in central Athens after a march organized by unions to oppose Prime MinisterGeorge Papandreou’s drive to cut the European Union’s biggest budget deficit.

Hooded youths threw rocks, marble and other objects at riot police after the march today to the country’s Parliament building. At least one person was detained.

“People on the street will send a strong message to the government but mainly to the European Union, the markets and our partners in Europe that people and their needs must be above the demands of markets,” Yiannis Panagopoulos, president of
the private-sector union GSEE, told NET TV yesterday. “We didn’t create the crisis.”

More and it is spreading to Spain

Yes, the Greeks are fighting for their entitlements which will bankrupt the country. Reminds me of the clueless Dems in the White House and Congress who are dead set on bankrupting our govt with their wild deficit spending. Greece is in deep, deep sh*t and their bankruptcy could cause a worldwide recession to get much worse and last much longer.

Could cause their dollar to crash...people need to be aware of that. The world economy affects t=us too! We can not live oblivious to the world's affairs....and now an earthquake in Chile.....things are getting worse all the time....Lord help us!

That is wright LORD help us, We need to ask the LORD for his help every day. That is why all these things are happening. Our goverment is takeing the LORDs name out of every thing. They passed a law to kill the unborn, and they say they are there for the people that's a down right lie if they were then they would protect the unborn, the one's that need it the worst. But no they let doctors chop the unborn up just like killing hogs. If this country dont get back to praying and get it back in that white house then we can just forget it all, Look it's in the BIBLE all you have to do is read it. All these people that are letting these unborn children die and being choped up will burn in hell forevery, the lord will deal with harshly.

How true. The youth in Greece can not get jobs. The unions have them tied up and are creating shortages. In Greece you can not just go open some sort of business like you can here in America. You have to go through the govt and ask for permission and must go through training if necessary, which in some cases can take years. Say for instance, you want to be a jeweler. You must spend something like 10-12 years as an apprentice first, under someone else and then maybe the govt will allow you to open a store. Maybe. This has caused a tremendous amount of grief over there. The govt controls all aspects of their lives. The people are finally getting tired of it and are now acting up.

This seems inconsequental to the US, but it actually is quit important.

"seek out like-minded people to ban together and look to our own means of support rather than expect the government to fix everything "

David X, well stated... We must begin to look to ourselves to develop a plan B ... even if conservatives are victorious this November... we must learn how to support ourselves... learn how to do without, travel locally... learn how to leave the car in the garage for longer lengths of time. I have been experimenting with my elec & gas bill... trying to use the absolute minimum necessary. Most days... the energy/fuel is NOT used (but I've been living in Nevada this winter).

Whatever happens, it is ALWAYS a good idea to have emergency food/water first-aid material (even in the best of times) Life is robust, but fragile at the same time. That is how He created it.... so make the right choices TODAY. You are blessed if another (neighbor, friend, relative, or government) comes to your rescue... but do not count on it.

We should have protests like these before the healthcare bill gets Rahmed through not after. It will be too late then. They are still not hearing us, they are listening to their lobbyists day and night.

Hello Darla,
I just found this post . It seems that the Globalist Banksters that have caused all of this mayhem in Greece and Spain with thier "Austerity Measures", have been whispering in Chairman Ben Bernake's ear. He actually warns us that what is happening in Greece could happen here! People had better WAKE UP!

Its time to ban government employee unions here in America. This could be a glimpse at our future too if Obama, Reid and Pelosi have their way.

Only 7.3 percent of all private sector employees are union members, while 37.6 percent of all government workers are unionized. Fifty-one percent of all union members are government workers.

These numbers ought to be red flags for taxpayers right here because "government employees don't strike to get higher wages from a private business -- they strike to get higher wages from me and you... the taxpayer.

David,
Why is it that you (and many here) can see the three options you posted above and recognize the third is the best--and yet--our elected officials cannot????

Why do those same officials allow their major contributors--- employers -- to continue to bring in and hire illegal workers while letting American citizens go? How long can America go with the reductions in jobs?? Why has illegal immigration as a major cause of poor economy and job loss to Americans never discussed any more? Why are politicians so concerned about staying in office visa the Hispanic vote instead of taking care of the core population??

What financial or fiscal issue is not sorely impacted and compounded by illegal immigration?? How long will America last if the basis of our economy id s to grow our population to (theoretically) add more workers to the SS list for more collections? The simple truth is most of them are paid in cash, pay little or nothing in taxes and consume our resources at a significantly faster rate than otherwise?

The history books will one day show (if there are any scholars left to write them), that the solution to America's problems was not to import millions of low educated, low skill workers for temporary savings for profit hungry employers. American families are having their children unable to find work in our economy. The current administration wants to increase the give away programs and the beneficiaries are of the welfare mindset or in our country illegally.

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Obama is undoubtedly watching how the government maintains power, just as he idolizes Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and the guy in Honduras whose name just left me.

Those of you that are wondering which way the police will "lean" if/when the time comes need to look at http://oathkeepers.org/oath/
and remember (according to last stats I saw) the police (all lumped together) are outnumbered by about 5000 (Americans) to 1. Maybe they better remember that also.
