If you have children who are enrolled in public school, please take the time to look in their textbooks - especially their history and English textbooks. What you find there might shock you.
Let the textbook publishers and your school districts know what you think, also.
I teach 10th grade English, and the textbooks we adopted last year, published by Prentice Hall, feature an essay by Barack Hussein Obama entitled "What I See Through Lincoln's Eyes." This book was adopted LAST summer, in 2008, when Obama was running for president.
I cannot blame my school district, however; all the publishers of textbooks have swallowed the Kool Aid and they (those elite from around the country) who decide what our children need to learn are rubbing multiculturalism and leftist ideology in our faces so hard that it's becoming frustrating and even NAUSEATING to try to deal with these books and teach them to my students.
There has been a concerted effort to rid our textbooks of as many white writers as possible. Quality just doesn't matter anymore. It's all political. Maya Angelou will be given more space than Shakespeare.
I'm not saying that Angelou isn't a good writer; I'm just saying we are going overboard in trying to include as many minorities and women as possible, while failing to question if this material is the very BEST we can offer our students.. Given the richness of the western canon of literature from both England and America, we should not have to shove Mexican or Chinese poems into our kids' faces as the standard of excellence when we know that they really are not the best the English langauge has to offer. . Again, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with them, but when they supplant Robert Frost and Edgar Allan Poe, well, that's cheating the students. We are lowering standards so that nobody feels left out. Educators "in the know" say it gives them a richness of experiencene. Well, I think they are already getting that with the changing demographics of this country. Why can't we expose them to Whitman, Dickinson, Dickens, and Tennyson like we used to? What is so wrong with our culture that we have to replace the great literature of Western Civilization with the drivel of third world countries?
