DeMint Pushes 'Term Limits for All'
11/18/2009 - 10:10:51 AM
Recently, Sen. DeMint introduced a "Term Limits for All" bill that would serve as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution if it were to gain enough support in Congress and among the American people. The bill would finally put an end an era of permanent politicians on Capitol Hill by limiting House members to three terms, and senators to two. So far Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Kay Baily Hutchison (R-Texas) and Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) have signed on as cosponsors of the bill.

“Some say only long-serving, seasoned elites have the skills to lead the people, but that’s exactly what we have today and how do you think it’s working out for us?” said DeMint in a press release. “It wasn’t the ‘people’ who gave us a $12 trillion debt, an IRS tax code seven times longer than the Bible, over 1,700 departments of the federal government, trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, $100 trillion long-term shortfall in Social Security and Medicare, the Wall Street and auto bailouts, and the pending health care takeover."

Last week Mark Tapscott, editor of the Washington Examiner, explained the need for term limits in Congress:

[The "Term Limits for All' bill] is, uniquely, one of the most radical proposed changes in American politics in decades, and the reestablishment of one of the oldest conservative traditions of the American political culture, with roots deep in the colonial era.

They called it “rotation in office” in colonial days. It was so widely held that nobody batted an eye when Thomas Jefferson proposed term limiting members of the Continental Congress. The limits were needed, Jefferson said, “to prevent every danger which might arise to American freedom by continuing too long in office the members of the Continental Congress.[...]

There is a growing “throw all the bums out” feeling in this country that threatens career politicians in both parties. The rotting fruits of their tenure are only beginning to stink up the place, and they don’t know how to do anything but make it worse.

Change is coming, and, unlike 1995 and the Contract with America failure, I’m willing to bet that this time around term limits won’t be denied."

Other media outlets reporting on DeMint's amendment include: Townhall.com, The Washington Times and CNN.

On top of that, what ever they pass up there in Washington, pertains to them too! They cannot exclude themselves from any law they put on us! Health care - they're under it. Higher taxes - they're under it. Property usage - they're under it. Personal finances - they're under it (no special loans from their buddies).

And, because they are public servants, their entire history and finances are open to US, the citizens who are footing their bills! We want quarterly reports, published on the WEB. We want to see for ourselves, where they are getting money from, and where they are spending it! One screw up, and they are GONE!!! Period. No "second changes", no "I'm sorry". We, America, must restore accountability to our government or we are finished! Period.

Missouri already has this voted in for term limit's on the national level. It just needs for 3/4 of the states to come on board.

Excellent idea, however, it might have been better to have waited until after the 2010 elections, when the conservatives might have more clout in congress. This won't even get out of committee or even see the light of day for debate, regardless of how many Americans want this (as we can see with the medical mess). I agree, when their time in Washington is done, they go back to being regular Americans, no special treatment (who the h@@@ do they think they are anyway?).
Also, why take an oath when they are sworn in when it doesn't seem to make any difference? Is it a legal oath, like in court? Can they be prosecuted for not living up to their oath? What are the mechanization's we, the citizens of this nation, can use to initiate taking back control of our government? It's in the constitution. When we feel government has overstepped it's power, we can disband them and start over. I think we are way passed that point. We need to clean out the Supreme Court also. They have drastically overstepped their power. No way are they allowed to generate laws, yet they have done so since the early 1800's. Congress needs to pull them back in. Time to impeach some justices. It's time for all good Americans to educate themselves and force this nations government to get back under control! We, the people.... remember?

We currently have 19 candidates in our BRING HOME Candidate Coalition (5 in Texas alone - what a shock).

If the goal was to rely on politicians to lead the charge on this, I agree it would be wishful thinking, that's why we're at the same time trying to get voter ballot initiatives going in the 18 states that allow for them.

This way, all these petition gathering skills everyone's gained can be put to good use to get enough signatures to get it added to the ballot (usually 15% of the amount of votes cast for Governor which in Montana means needing 48,600 signatures) and come Nov 2010 this can become law, at least on the state level with a simple majority of votes bypassing the state legislature.

Success in all 18 states means 1/3 of the union will now have this LOCALIZED CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC system.

That's how you build the wave now to overcome politician resistance.

> The first thing we need to do is enact the FairTax. This would cut off the lobbying to change the tax code. It would also make it plain and simple for every America to see how much he or she is actually paying in taxes.

In an age of bold and increasing corruption, term limits are badly needed. Meanwhile, if this socialist plan gets out of the Senate, I would like to see a complete list of House members with their districts listed and Senators who aided in any way. Then I will personally campaign with my time and finances against those who live in KY, TN, NC and VA as they come up for re-election.
If Resist Net, Team Sarah and other patriotic sites did this is their respective regions, we could open the eyes of a lot of people. So-called Democrat moderates who play one game in D.C. and another in their districts will have no place to hide. Ditto for so-called Republican conservatives who are as equally deceptive and repulsive.

Power corrupts. Too long in Washington creates too much opportunity for corruption.

these comments reflect what many of us, myself included, have said to friends, even before the last elections. The original idea was to be like jury duty - serve, do your best, and go home. I agree with the comment about no special favors, no life-time retirement or health care benefits. And, in light of what we see now, yes, I agree with Donna. So, I am thinking that we need to keep these great ideas at the front of our minds, and find the opportunity to meet with our representatives who think like we do - really, I am thinking Sarah Palin perhaps, since everyone is so responsive to what she says... but anyway, if she makes this an issue, it might have more steam going forward. I just think it is important to get some of these ideas moving. So much good stuff seems to leave the front page, and then the blogs just reflect people letting off steam. When I don't see issues, I tend not to check back, because in spite of all our efforts, like everyone else is venting, they aren't listening. I am frustrated just like everyone else... but so much of what I read, regardless of how urgent everyone sounds, I just feel like it is more of the same - Anyway, I think the country is ripe for reform and this is an excellent idea that needs to go forward and probably has more chance with a good figurehead...
