Defend the Constitution, Reject Global Governance A litmus test for leadership

Restore our Constitution
By Henry Lamb Sunday, May 31, 2009

The media appear to delight in exploiting the plight of the Republican Party, particularly the flap between Dick Cheney and Colin Powell. Cheney’s comment that he thought Powell had left the Republican Party because he endorsed Obama, provided a perfect opportunity for Powell to take the TV podium to tell Republicans they must become more moderate to reverse the flight from their ranks.

What America needs cannot be found in either major party at the moment, nor in any of the dozens of other parties hoping to become a “third party.” The litmus test for leadership is quite simple. Voters should find candidates – regardless of party – who pass this leadership test.

Defend the Constitution

Every candidate for national elective office swears an oath to “…preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” For many of these elected officials, this is the last time they utter the word, or even think about the U.S. Constitution.

In order to “…preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution…” every law produced by Congress must be grounded in, and authorized by the Constitution. Few are. Where in the Constitution, for example, is there authority for the federal government to declare that all the water in the United States is the “Waters of the United States?” Where, exactly, does the Constitution authorize the federal government to strip private property owners of the right to use their property because a particular kind of bug or plant happens to be on the property? Constitution-loving congressmen have been trying to get a law enacted that requires every proposed law to cite Constitutional authority for the law. Every congress since 1994 has rejected this legislation.

Before voting for another congressional candidate, every voter should require his candidate to pledge to co-sponsor and vote for The Enumerated Powers Act (HR450).

Reject Global Governance

It is impossible to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” and vote to surrender sovereignty over territorial seas to the United Nations. Both Senators John Kerry, and Richard Lugar, chairman and ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, advocate doing just that. Both are on record supporting the Convention on the Law of the Sea, which clearly requires that: “…sovereignty over the territorial seas is exercised subject to this Convention and to other rules of international law (Article 2(3)).

This treaty also requires submission to the International Seabed Authority, which has global authority for exploiting the seabed – and regulating waters that flow into the sea as well as the adjacent lands that may affect the waters that eventually get into the seas. This treaty is global governance.

Several other treaties pending ratification also surrender sovereignty to the United Nations. The Obama administration, aided by a Democratic majority and far too many willing Republicans, intends to ratify all of them.

The Obama administration is also a willing participant in the development of a global mechanism to regulate the flow of currency, which undoubtedly would have to skim a small administrative fee, and thereby gain an independent revenue stream - and regulate global trade. This has been a major goal of the United Nations since the publication of the final report of the Commission on Global Governance.

In Washington, and across the country, there is a growing willingness to accept further international entanglement and a willingness to reject constitutional principles. This is because the advocates of collectivism have been far more aggressive than the advocates of freedom have been. In the past, freedom has reigned, and its advocates have been complacent.

In the past, the threat of tyranny has been sufficient to mobilize the complacent advocates of freedom to respond with whatever it took to defeat the would-be conquerors. The time has come once again to respond to freedom’s call.

It is still early enough in the unfolding threat to reverse the gains of the collectivist usurpers. Every voter should hold every candidate accountable to at least these two tests of American values: Co-sponsor and vote for the Enumerated Powers act; and to reject global governance by rejecting entangling international treaties.

Regardless of party affiliation, a candidate who will not pledge to stand for these two values does not deserve to be in Congress, or in government at any other level. Conversely, office holders who fail this litmus test should be turned out of office at the very next election.

Rather than expend energy building a particular political party, voters would do well by expending energy to find candidates who pass the litmus test and advance the values it represents.
If we cannot stop the current threat by imposing this kind of litmus test on the people we elect to office, the next battle will be much more difficult, and will require much more effort, treasure, and, perhaps, blood.

This is a good post. I make no bones about myself being a Republican and do not support the emergence of a third party, primarily because it will further weaken the Republican party and ensure Democrat victories for years to come.

However, it has become very apparent that many Republicans are far more concerned about getting elected than standing on principle and defending the constitution. I'd rather see a principled Republican lose an election, than compromise his principles and defense of the constitution. There is nothing to be gained by electing a 'moderate' Republican who governs as a democrat and serves his own self interest as opposed to advancing the cause of Freedom and Liberty.

I'm with Christoher here, good post! I also don't want to waste precious time building a third party. The Conservative part of the Republican Party is grounded in the "core principles of Conservatism". If you believe these and want to live by these, you're in the party already! Quit messin' with the social issues. They work themselves out with the guidance of the "core principles".
Not one Vote to One candidate or serving rep. who has violated the Constitution.PERIOD.

Rev. Michael,
I read this article and, having read it, feel the subject is too important and deep to allow a framing of a simple answer. I am rather new to Patriotic Resistance and don't know if the article will still be there several days from now when I will have given the article its deserved thought and research. Simple respect and credit for your effort demands no less from me.

Yes, George Washington said not to trust Politicians, but to hold them down to the limits of the Constitution, and as much as we've gotten away from that we have truly gone astray from the Constitutional Republic we are meant to be!
The Republican Liberty Caucus has an "Obey the Constitution / no new taxes" pledge they are asking every Politician to sign, exactly like this, very good idea!
You can find it here:
http://www.rlc.org/endorsements/liberty-compact/
"I pledge to the citizens of this State, and to the American people, that as their elected representative I will work to: restore liberty, not restrict it; shrink government, not expand it; reduce taxes, not raise them; abolish programs, not create them; promote the freedom and independence of citizens, not the interference of government in their lives; and observe the limited, enumerated powers of our Constitution, not ignore them."

The global law movement is something that progressives and the liberal left have embraced as part of their stance that anything American must somehow be lacking. It is a very big issue where the Supreme Court is concerned. The Supreme Court is supposed to decide/determine cases based on US law/the Constitution. In recent years, in an effort to combat the influence of conservative appointees, the idea/philosphy has been put forth that the Court should also consider how case law is being decided in other countries.
The justification is that it brings a broader perspective and better decisions. The actual agenda is that the case law that is to be used in most cases is from countries/decisions that support a stronger federal vs local, and weaker soveriegn vs global. Its kind of like in school, where instead of standing for what you believe, you wait and see how everyone else is going and do the same. Since the majority of European (the primary source of these reference cases) society is moving toward or is socialist, and most UN cases are always decided in favor of the UN, this gives cover for the subversion of the US case law and consitution.

I think this is also based on a certain amount of Euro philia. Most of the East/West coast elite (remember Kerry) think that anything from Europe is just automatically better than the US and that we should follow their lead instead of being the lead.

We should not, under any circumstances, surrender control of our laws and sovereignty to the World Court or United Nations. The United Nations wishes to totally disarm America and RULE our country. The world court doesn't even have the authority to prosecute the Somali pirates who are capturing the ships at sea and holding them hostage for ransom. Many of our current elected officials are guilty of treason by trying to give this control to the United Nations in the form of treaties. Our current President has bowed to the Saudi King, apologized for America's "arrogance" and spoken ill of us around the world. Is he campaigning to be "World President"? Stand up for our Constitution and our sovereignty against this tyranny. Our elected officials MUST follow our Constitution. The shadow government(CZARS) has no standing to govern our elected officials or violate the Constitution.

Let's not forget that most Republicans have bought into this as well in the name of "free market capitalism." Both parties are corrupt and both are bought by the interests of international banking cartels.

I with you Roy! If ANY representative has spent more than 5 years on the hill, chances are they have been currupted or compromised in some way.Any rep who is worth "saving", had better have the voting record of a conservative bend or they are gone.PERIOD.

A worthwhile effort to get them to honor their oaths of office would be for the masses to petition their states Attourney Generals to sue for breach of contract. The oath is not just a ceremonial event, it is a binding contract that is so important to the recipe of our country's operations that the founders included it in the Constitution. There is a way to make the oath matter again, and it will be found when the masses return to considering it binding.

Most excellent idea,Larry! I have seen rumblings of this approach and it is gaining some ground. It ought to be in our hands when we go to D.C. Should be able to get at least 30,000 signatures there alone! AND... if every protest site in the Republic had a petition on hand when they march locally on 9/12, I'm sure we could get it noticed! : )

I am in no way discouraging ideas for something big.
As individuals we can also be active in our daily acitivities. Most anybody I've talked with about the oaths are upset about them not being honored. But they also are of the mindset that nothing can be done.. this is where we can have daily impact. All we have to do is convince that person, in that conversation that it's just a decision they need to make. Do they believe their opinion is helping the oaths have integrity? To do their part all they have to do is make the decision to consider it a binding contract and then work towards gettting others to make that decision.

It is a binding contract ! But this is a case of perception being reality. If you think it should be binding but perceive it not to be binding you are perpetuating the misperception and hindering the healing of our country.
It's been effective for me. I've turned many around just with stating the obvious point.

You want the oaths to be binding?? Then consider it binding !

I too have been communicating with my fellow town-folk and anyone who will listen on this matter. I wear my teabag on my clothing to promote the question ,"why are you wearing a teabag?"It is a start to a long conversation about our governments take-over.I have many converts to my credit, but not enough,so I am still active and determined to save My Republic from the "un-natural state of Socialism" I don't trust any of them to all of the sudden, start honoring the oath they took. My distrust runs deep and my suspitions grow daily as to what 545 people have managed to do to the lives of over 300,000 American Citizens.
