Another Dem overrun by protesters at town hall

Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona is the latest Democrat overrun by protesters at a local town hall event.

Sources say the protesters showed up after a robocall -- it's unclear from whom -- went out to Arizona voters encouraging them to show up at the event. The event was supposed to involve one on one chats with Kirkpatrick, a freshman member of Congress.

Kirkpatrick was unable to get the event started and canceled it.

"I am disappointed that the event was disrupted by a small but vocal group," Kirkpatrick said. "I grew up in Greater Arizona, and I remember the days when folks who disagreed would do so respectfully and were still able to work together on the important issues to find solutions."

Kirkpatrick is the latest Democrat to run into what Republicans have called "recess roastings," as congressional town halls from Utica, N.Y. to Austin, Texas, to Green Bay, Wis., have been disrupted this week by protesters. Debate continues over how genuine a grass roots movement this is, but POLITICO has reported that national conservative interest groups have helped organize some of the opposition.

"These 'chats' are meant to give people a chance to let me know what they need and what's important to them, and today's disruptions meant that a lot of folks did not get that chance," Kirkpatrick said. "I look forward to more public events, but more importantly I look forward to a return of civility and respectful dialogue where the focus is on the people and not scoring political points."

UPDATE: Turns out the anti-health reform group Conservatives for Patients Rights posted the Kirkpatrick event on its listing of town halls.

Your naivete is dangerous! These folks who are expressing their anger and frustration did not just come to the cause yesterday. They have been calling their elected officials for months, have had to endure the rudeness and callousness of the staff manning their offices, have been lied to again and again, and most importantly, have been ignored. Adding insult to injury, they are then forced to watch their legislators vote in direct conflict of the values they hold dear.

I think the old adage that you must give respect to get respect applies here.

Also, do you realize that these townhalls are being staged by our lawmakers? Pro government run health care supporters are being allowed in before the 'people', are being given talking points and pro-ObamaCare signs, and now, union thugs have been called in to act as enforcers. How in God's name do you process that and still feel obligated to act civil when confronting these dishonorable people!?

I am glad you have come closer to the center. It is people like you, I will be respectful and listen to you. I think the big difference is, where you are willing to talk about issus, the congressmen, and senators are not. Many of us know what major issues are in the bill and have rejected the plans to push them through. In addition, people know what a gov run health care system leads to and once again reject the push for it. IF these politicians had of not rushed the stimulus bill literally in the middle of the night, pushed cap and trades passage in blazing speed and then follow with this rapid attempt to pass healthcare "reform" there would not be this reaction and aggressive response. And now gas is being poured on a blazing fire, with the insults coming from the politicians. The politicians have spoken and the American people have said We the People will now do so and Senator or Congressmen it is time for you to listen. Unfortunately, when a politician begans to spout out talking points, that do not represent the truth, a strong, loud reply is necessary. As long as the politicians are not truthful, the angrier and louder the crowd will become.

I was a registered Independent. Since the country has been taken over by what I consider the radical Left, I've decided, in order to have a voice, I must choose the side I most closely identify with.... In a bizarre twist, it has become very easy to figure out where I stand on most issues today.

It is no longer the America I'm familiar with. In fact, I have heard Democrats express fear of inflation and the general road Obama is leading this nation as well.

Most of us aren't fools. Many of us are able to read and understand the bills that are being presented. Our leaders refuse to understand that we know MORE than they regarding important legislation. They feel they think they know better than us even though they have their aids read and think for them.

I fear that they don't bother to read and understand the finer points of pending legislation because they most closely identify with Socialism/Marxism/Communism. They don't really need to read it. History tells us that they won't necessarily mind if we all go over the cliff together because they can build the "People's Paradise"/Utopia upon the ruins of a capitalist society. In my humble opinion, that explains why they are hell bent on destroying our country and the suicidal rush toward the abyss.

If they themselves have no clear understanding of what we are talking about or don't care how we feel, what are we to do? If we don't make CLEAR to them our real passion and outrage, they will legislate us all into a hard tyranny. This would be a complete and total dictatorship.

If the house is burning down and no one seems to care about seriously putting out the fire, people tend to get a little passionate as the flames get closer to themselves and their loved ones! I don't know about you Lisa, but as for me, I know when I need to get a little more involved and perhaps much more vocal as well!

and actually that is our plan...flip the house...vote them out....there is a lot of momentum for that! The DC March is about that too!

You know, I do agree, the shouting and not letting the congressman talk is counter productive, I feel that when you go to the meeting, be prepared with a copy of the bill, then politely ask a question about it, then allow him to answer, then point out the bill # that contradicts it, and if they are confused, then politely show them what it says and ask why they are for it if they do not know all that is contained in it.There is no way they can memorize that bill and if you notice, they do not carry a copy of it into the meeting, and be sure to video tape their confusion when they are asked a question and they cannot answer it and you show the section you are talking about.

Look at how many decided to not appear in person, what good does that do, they can get the same message without shouting them down, and you can make them look foolish by being cordial and asking questions that they have no answers for.

You know, it is one thing if meetings are canceled because they cannot provide answers to well informed people and the fact that they have their own wording in the bill to back you up, that is better than them being not able to talk at all because of all the screaming and shouting going on and they just leave and decide to not have anymore.

I ask again, is it not better for them to be embarressed that the constituents know more and are better informed about the bill than they are?

No, I don't think you get it. The congress does not see people being upset with this-they see potential votes for the next election being angry about this bill. Votes put them in office and votes put them out of office.

To be perfectly honest, the left has protested pretty much continually about something since the 1960's. But, the Washington representatives have not really ever seen the silent majority put the shoe leather to the pavement and say 'enough is enough'.

I do think you need to do a little more investigation too. Check out WHO started the issues that ended in arrests in St. Louis and check out WHO said if they bring a knife to the fight we'll bring a gun (hint-he's president) and find out who said they would push back double against the protesters (hint, he's a former community organizer).

Civil discourse has to have two people listening-Washington isn't listening and therefore you now have the protests.

"I don't think you get it. Expressing outrage doesn't change what the Whitehouse and congress are going to do."

You may be right! It may not necessarily change the behavior of the current elitist administration. (I hope it does!) But one thing for sure, those of us who see the writing on the wall... are AWARE and are of one mind. We have changed our behavior! We must stay the course. Pleasant, polite behavior is the ideal, but when it came right down to it, when faced with tyranny, our forefathers did not roll over quietly either!.

The NY Town Hall (Rep. Tim Biship) video displayed at the top of this homepage is the perfect example of meaningful dialog. I'm pretty sure he now knows his constituents can back up their displeasure at the ballot box! They make approx 175K yr (Taxpayer $) While many are losing their jobs! There is nothing at all, in my opinion, wrong with the raucous behavior of those in attendance as they reacted to outright falsehoods coming right out of Tim Bishop's mouth. My instincts tell me he is making his plan B because he knows NOW that he is in danger of being voted out of office. Of course, he may finally understand that he might need to change his behavior to better reflect the desires of those who put him in office in the first place.. When you have to use it, "tough love" can really work! I hope it works out b/c the alternative is unimaginable.

I like what Sean Hannity told a liberal caller. He informed the caller that so what? What is wrong if some of the protesters are bussed in from 150 miles away? They have a right to protest just as much as the people that the liberals bussed in. It also shows the concern thay have and the fact that they want answers not propaganda.

Germany was a cultured and well-educated country when Hitler came into power. “He” offered “Hope and Change” right after Germany’s defeat in WWI and imposition of harsh reparations. We have Americans fighting an unseen enemy everywhere. America’s other real enemy is in the White House and Congress. America’s heritage is at stake and patriotic Americans won’t stand for politicians lying, stealing and Constitutional insulting behavior any longer. WE THE PEOPLE have a voice and we want it heard. The ballot box is the proper way and we have to let our representatives know it in no uncertain terms. We cannot allow ACORN to steal the 2010 elections.

I think they think that our movement is a temporary thing. Once they figure out that we are not going away, until death, they will start to change their tone.

Every day the 2010 election draws closer and closer.

The majority of the folks there were senior citizens and a few old vets. They were very courteous to Congresswoman Kirkpatrick. They just wanted answers to there questions, that's all and she just walked out on them! I guess she'll be a one term Congresswoman now.
